A Neighboring View

Saturday, March 6, 2004 to Sunday, June 13, 2004
Church Exhibition Gallery, Lyman Plant House

Photographs of the Botanic Garden by neighboring Northampton resident and photographer, Judy B. Messer.

The Botanic Garden of Smith College first captivated Judy Messer when she was searching for fresh air and walking grounds not too far from home. Over the years, unique visual elements in the gardens called to her, and she began a photographic journey that continues to this day. Under her command, the camera transforms commonplace garden settings into unexpected beauty, often providing the backdrop for her portraits of children.

My neighboring view of the Botanic Garden was documented over the past fifteen years. It is an honor to have this opportunity to present this selection of photographic images that reflect back some of the peace and beauty that inspired me. This exhibition is a thank you to Smith College for sharing these gardens, which I and so many others have been able to enjoy.

The photographs are presented using a variety of photographic techniques: Silver fiber based prints, color traditional prints, Archival B&W ink jet prints, fabric tapestry and oil painted silver Fiber Base prints.
